Well done to our athletes who ran in a friendly athletics meeting against President Steyn on Monday.  You all did your best and we are proud of you.  Thank you to the parents who were able to come along and support our athletes.

 

WARNING

We have received information about two people trying to abduct small children in the greater Alberton area.  Their descriptions are as follows:

·         Black male with a scar on his face

·         Black female with red spiky hair

Please warn your children about talking to, or accepting anything from strangers.  This should serve as a special warning to those parents who leave their children unattended on our pavement after school until after 5p.m. in the evenings.

 

We cannot be held accountable for your child’s safety.

 

SCHOOL FEES 2010:

OPTION A payments are due by 5 MARCH 2010, NO EXTENSION WILL BE GIVEN.  To avoid any disappointment and in order to qualify for the discount, the money must be received or paid into the school’s bank account on or before 5 MARCH 2010.  Thank you for your co-operation in this regard.  Please do not leave this payment until the last minute.

SCHOOL FEES EXEMPTION 2010

Please be advised that applications for school fee exemptions are now being considered.  Applications will be considered in line with current legislative principles.  Please contact the school should you require more information regarding documentation for applications.

Exemptions will not be considered without all relevant documentation, ie. covering letter, application form (obtainable from office), proof of earnings, 3 months bank statements.

Statements have been sent out this week.  If you did not receive one, please check your child’s bag.

2009 YEAR BOOK

The 2009 Year Book has been issued, one per family.  The youngest child has received it.  If there is a query as to why you have not received one, please contact the office.

PLEASE NOTE:  This is only applicable to learners who were at Brackenhurst Primary in 2009.

Should you wish to purchase a copy of the Year Book, (available at the office), the cost is R100,00.

 

INDIVIDUAL PHOTOGRAPHS

Individual photographs will be taken on 10 March 2010.  The athletics and touch rugby photos will be taken on the same day.

The set of photos will consist of:         1     15cm x 23cm photo

1        13cm x 18cm photo

2        10cm x 15cm photo

3        wallet (8 photos)

Cost is R60,00.

The photos will be slightly different from last year’s.  The background will be different.  The photos will be black and white with some colour on the braiding/shirt and the background.  A sample of the photo may be viewed in the front office.

 

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Bible Club:

All Grade 1,2 and 3 learners interested in joining the Bible Club, please come along to

Mrs Scholtz’s class, (New classroom), on Tuesday afternoons from 13:00 – 14:00

 

Touch Rugby: (Gr 7 only)

Gr 7 Touch Rugby practices have begun.  Practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays:  14:00 – 15:30.  All Gr 7’s, boys and girls,  are welcome to try out.  Matches will be played every Friday at Waterstone College.

 

Athletics:

Interschools will be held on 16 February, 2010.  ALTERNATE DAY 17 FEBRUARY, 2010 at Glenview Primary school.  Each athlete participating will receive an invitation letter.  Please note athletes are to wear the new athletics top.  These may be purchased from Wayne on Monday, 15 February 2010 in front of the hall from 07:30 to 08:00 or alternatively call him on

082 959 2450.

THERE WILL BE NO ATHLETICS TRAINING ON MONDAY 15 FEBRUARY, ONLY ON WEDNESDAY 17 FEBRUARY.

 

Physical Education Uniform:

The Physical Education Uniform is on sale before school, outside the hall, on Monday (next week only) and Thursday from 07:30 – 08:00.  Please note that this kit is compulsory for all learners for P.E. classes.  They may come to school dressed in their P.E. kit on the days they have P.E. at school.  Only the CORRECT P.E. kit may be worn to school.  Please note that learners must wear socks and takkies with this uniform.  No other shoes are permitted.

Girls Soccer:

Rovers Football Club is starting a girls soccer team to participate in the league.  Practices commenced on 2 February and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday.  Age groups are from U/10 – U/14.  Please contact Martin Royle on 083 448 5533 for more information.  PLEASE NOTE GIRLS SOCCER IS NOT HELD AT BRACKENHURST PRIMARY.

Tennis:

Tennis practices are on MONDAYS.  The times are as follows:

          Grade 1         13:05 – 13:30

          Grade 2         13:30 – 13:55

          Grade 3-7      13:55 – 14:20

          School team   14:20 – 15:00

 

All are welcome.

 

Junior Enviro Club:

Junior Enviro Club for learners Grade 1 – 3 will be held on Thursday afternoons in the lab., from 13:45 – 14:30.

 

Gauteng Land Service – Hippy Hippo’s Club:

The Land Service is a cultural youth movement which strives towards a youth competent in the management and conservation of our environment in its totality.  We would like to invite all Grade 4-7 learners that would like to be registered to participate in the Land Service to meet with Mrs Robberts on Thursday 18 February at 13:45 until 14:30 in C42.  Registration fee for 2010 is R60,00.

 

L-10 Kids Group:

All Gr 6 and 7 learners interested in joining the L-10 Kids Christian Group are welcome to come along.  Practices take place in the school hall every Tuesday afternoon from 14:30 – 15:30.

The study requirements for the Grade 4 Social Sciences Cycle Test are as follows:

          Map grids.

 

The study requirements for the Grade 4 EMS Cycle Test are as follows:

          Pages 1 – 4 in workbooks

          Textbook pages 1 – 9

          Needs and wants terminology;  Producers and Consumers;   The Economic Cycle;

          Uses of resources in community;  Caring for resources.

 

Corrective Mathematics:

Corrective Mathematics lessons for Grade 6 learners will take place every Tuesday afternoon from 14:00 to 14:45 in Room C33.

 

As there is Touch Rugby on Tuesday afternoons, Corrective Mathematics lessons for Grade 7 learners has changed from TUESDAY to WEDNESDAY afternoon from 14:00 – 14:45 in the multi-purpose room

 

There will be no corrective mathematics lessons for Grade 5 learners on Tuesday, 16 February, due to the Inter-Schools.

 

Study Skills:

Study Skills lessons for Grade 5 – 7 learners will be held every Wednesday afternoon from 14:00 – 14:30 in Room C12 (Miss V’s classroom).

 

FUNDRAISING

My School Card – Brackenhurst Primary is in 4th position on funds raised:

My School Card:

If you do not have a MY SCHOOL CARD, application forms are available at the office.  It costs you nothing.  Everytime you shop at Woolworths or any of the stores linked to MY SCHOOL CARD, make sure you have your card swiped.  The school then receives a monthly rebate. 

Remember you are not limited to one card per family, you can apply for more for aunts, uncles, etc.  Ensure, when completing the application form that you specify it is to be linked to BRACKENHURST PRIMARY SCHOOL.

Used Printer Cartridges:

We will be collecting used printer cartridges for recycling purposes, in conjunction with “My School”.  When you replace your printer cartridge, please send the old one in with your child, as we will receive a cash incentive for collecting them.  If you are able to collect old cartridges at work please send these in as well.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

SPCA:This year we will be helping our four-legged friends, awaiting homes at the SPCA.  This term we will be collecting old newspapers and cat and dog food.  All donations will be greatly appreciated and can be given to Miss Agnew, Room C48.

J29 Safehouse:

This term we will be collecting coins for J29 Safehouse.  Please send spare change to Ms Pheiffer (Room M1).

 

Please note that a maximum of 10 roses will be awarded per term for participation in community outreach projects so please do not feel pressurized to buy items to ensure that your child is awarded “Roses.’

 

WORLD CUP SOCCER CIVVIES

On the last Friday of every month from January – June, learners may wear a pair of jeans or shorts and a soccer jersey of any of the countries participating in the FIFA 2010 World Cup at a cost of R5,00 per civvies day.  Please note that this is not a general civvies day so no other civvies may be worn. English Premiership soccer jerseys such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool may not be worn.  No jewellery or make up may be worn. 

 

The remaining civvies days will be held on the following dates:

 

·         26 February

·         19 March (week before break up day)

·         30 April

·         28 May

·         4 June (week before break up day)

GENERAL

Scouts/Cubs:

To commemorate Lord Baden Powell’s birthday, cubs and scouts may wear their cub/scout uniforms on Friday, 19 February 2010.

 

Animal Food:

Thank you to Gr 7L for their contributions to the lab.

We are appealing to Gr 7M to please bring the following items to the lab. next week: Wild bird seed;  budgie seed;  mixed bird seed;  hamster food and bedding; rabbit food; carrot tops and lettuce.

Second Hand Clothing Shop:

The Second Hand Clothing Shop will be open at the following times:

            Wednesday:                07:15 – 07:40

                                                13:45 – 14:30

            Venue:  C14

Excellent quality school uniforms are available at good prices.

Lost Property:

Please ensure that your child’s uniform is clearly marked with his/her name and surname.  Unmarked school uniform items will be “recycled” into the Second Hand Clothing Shop after two weeks.  Lost property can be found under the stairwell outside Room C14.

 

Green Tip:

“Reduce your carbon footprint: Recycle your old/used school clothing, buy from our 2nd hand shop and donate back.”
