SCHOOL RULES

A. DRESS AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE

 GENERAL

When a learner is wearing the school uniform or a school sports kit, all rules apply even if the learner is not on the school premises.

The girls may wear only one pair of sleepers or studs in their ears. The boys may not wear any form of earring. Tongue rings, eye brow rings, nose rings etc. are not permitted. Other than “medic alert” discs and a wristwatch – no other jewellery may be worn. A signet ring may be worn by the girls.

Religious or cultural symbols/charms etc., if worn, must be concealed under the school uniform. However, it is accepted that at certain times various religions will visibly display certain symbols/charms etc. this will only be permitted once a prior written request is forwarded to the Ethics Committee (via the principal) and approved by this body.

No “Lance Armstrong” type bangles may be worn. The only bracelet that will be permitted is the official BRACKENHURST PRIMARY SCHOOL “Strive and Achieve” bracelet.

All clothing and sports kit is to be kept clean and in good condition and must be clearly marked with the learner’s name. Learners are expected to take pride in their uniform.

The learners may wear a plain red (not maroon) jersey or anorak; or the school jersey obtained from the stockists. NO other colours or colour combinations are allowed.

The official school tracksuit may be worn to school on the days of matches provided that the learner is participating.

Shirt top buttons must be closed at all times.

Belts, if worn, must be plain grey or black.

Scarves, if worn, must be red, white, grey or a combination thereof or the official school scarf.

Only plain red beanies or the official school beanies may be worn – they must be taken off in the classroom

B. SCHOOL UNIFORM

BOYS

Winter: Plain grey trousers with a plain white long sleeve shirt and the school tie

Summer: Plain grey trousers (or plain grey shorts) with the red school shirt *

 Both of the above outfits must be worn with long, grey socks and black shoes – takkies are not permitted.

GIRLS

Winter: Plain grey school skirt (which may not be more than 5cm above the knee), a plain white long sleeve shirt with the school tie and long grey socks   ( in place of skirts, girls may wear grey tailored slacks - the hipster type is NOT allowed - or Grey woolen tights may be worn with the skirt in very cold weather)

Summer: Plain grey school skirt with the red school shirt and short white socks

 Both of the above outfits must be worn with black shoes – takkies are not permitted. Girls may wear black, grey, red or white cycle shorts under the grey skirt provided that the cycle shorts are not longer than the skirt. Cycle shorts should never be visible.

The rolling up of skirt waistbands or the sewing of big hems on the skirts is not permitted.

Girls are not permitted to wear boxer shorts. If boys choose to wear boxer shorts as a form of underwear, the boxer shorts must not be visible.

As a special concession, the Grade 7 learners may wear a white shirt and the specially designed red tie instead of the red shirt. (Short sleeved in summer and long sleeved in winter).

All learners may wear the black school blazer (it must have the school badge on the pocket).

Bras must be white or skin-tone. No lacy, see through bras may be worn.

Shirts are to be tucked in at all times. The folding over/under of shirts is not permitted.

On civvies day the learners may wear denim trousers or skirts or plain skirts (same length as school skirts or longer), tracksuit pants, boardshorts or plain colour shorts with a T-shirt. (Shirts must have sleeves, may not have low-cut fronts or backs and the midriff must be covered).

The girls may not wear shorts which are shorter than just above the knee. No make-up may be worn. The boys may not wear earrings. The discretion of the Management staff will be applied and learners inappropriately dressed will be told to change.

C. SPORT AND CULTURAL DRESS

In order for a learner to participate as a member of a team, the appropriate official kit must be worn.

Athletics: plain white shorts with the red and white athletics vest

Netball: the red skirt, with the official golf shirt. The socks must be plain white.

Soccer: white and red soccer shorts (or plain white shorts), the red and white soccer vest, the red and white socks.

Cricket: the official golf shirt; plain white shorts; the red and white socks and white takkies

Tennis: boys - white shorts and the official golf shirt, girls - official netball skirt and the official golf shirt

Chess, Choir and Eisteddfod: full school uniform unless otherwise instructed

The only tracksuit permitted is the official school tracksuit.

It is not necessary for the official kit to be worn to practices. However, learners must look tidy and respectable.

It is the responsibility of the learner to have his/her case and tog bag locked away in the coach’s classroom or administration block during sporting activities.

D. PHYSICAL EDUCATION

All learners must come to school and leave the school grounds in their school uniform, unless their extra mural activity finishes after 14:00, in which case the children may leave in their sports attire.

Learners may only change into their physical education clothes at school. After physical education the learners are to get dressed back into their school uniforms.

For physical education classes learners may only wear black or white rugby type shorts and a plain T-shirt in the colour of their respective houses (i.e.. Red, yellow or blue). Girls may wear the aforementioned cycle shorts if preferred.

In winter the official school tracksuit may be worn for physical education.

Physical education is always done barefoot or in takkies, no slops or other shoe types are allowed.

E. GENERAL SCHOOL RULES

The chewing of gum is not permitted (at school or in school uniform)

Hair: Boys: Hair must be neat and tidy. It may not: hang over the collar, cover the ears or hang in the eyes. Ponytails or other fancy styles (as determined by the school management) are not allowed.

Girls: Hair must be neat and tidy. Hair which is hanging over the eyes or longer than the collar must be tied up. Ribbons, alice bands, etc. must be plain white, red or black. Braided hair is permitted but no beads etc. may be added. Braided hair must be tied back.

* The colouring of hair, highlights, lowlights and dreadlocks as well as the use of any substance which changes the state of the hair, (eg. Gel, mousse, etc.) is not permitted.

Nails: Nails must be kept short and may not be painted. Clear nail varnish may be worn.

Make-up may not be worn while in school uniform, sports kit or on civvies days.

When changing for games, physical education etc. learners must change in the change rooms.

F. CONDUCT

Learners are expected to greet members of staff, adults and visitors and to extend the courtesies of hosts to our visitors. Learners are to ‘clear the way’ for adults to pass.

Seated learners should stand when teachers enter a room or when approached by adults.

Learners are expected to respect each other, their own property as well as other people’s possessions.

If a learner is ill his parents must inform the school in writing. Absenteeism for more than 3 days in succession requires a doctor’s note. If a learner misses any Assessment Activity, it is compulsory for a doctor’s note to be provided.

G. RULES APPLYING WITHIN THE SCHOOL BUILDINGS

Order is to prevail in the school buildings at all times.

No learner may enter or exit the school, through the main gate, the gate at the teachers’ car park or the gate on the tennis court driveway unless accompanied by a member of staff. No learner may leave during school time unless the parent has notified the school and the child is collected and signed out from the office by a parent. Doctors appointments are discouraged during school hours.

The hall and administration block (including the staff room) are out of bounds for learners unless sent with a message.

The classrooms are out of bounds before and after school and during breaks, except when a teacher is present.

The school grounds (including the buildings) are out of bounds over the weekends and during the holidays unless an official school activity has been organised and approved by a staff member.

The learners must keep left on the corridors to allow free movement. Running and unnecessary loitering must be avoided. Bags left on the corridors must be placed so as to not interfere with the flow of traffic.

All breakages must be reported to a teacher immediately.

‘Bathrooms’ must be left as found – flush toilets, turn off taps, etc.

Parents are not permitted to drive onto the school grounds between 07:00 and 14:30.

H. RULES APPLYING TO THE SCHOOL GROUNDS

All learners are to help control litter.

No bicycles, roller-blades etc. may be ridden on the school grounds.

To avoid injury to body and property, stone throwing is not permitted.

The cricket nets, netball courts and tennis courts are out of bounds unless a staff member is present.

No ball games may be played in the quad, on the corridors, in the car park or in close proximity to any school buildings.

Learners are to remain in the school grounds once they have been dropped off at school. They may not leave the school grounds until 12:55 (Gr 1 and 2), 13:25 (Gr 3) and 13:45 (Gr 4 – 7). Gr 1 and 2 learners are to wait on the Gr 1 playground between 13:25 and 13:45.

Only soft tennis balls may be played with at break.

I. PUNCTUALITY

All learners must be at school when the bell rings for the start of school. Late-comers must report to the office.

After assembly and between lessons learners are to go directly to their classrooms. After breaks the learners are to be lined up outside their classrooms.

J. PERSONAL PROPERTY

All items of uniform, sports kit, all text books, exercise books, calculators, etc. must be clearly marked with the learner’s name.

Valuables must not be brought to school. The school takes no responsibility for these items.

Bicycles must be chained to a post in the bicycle shed.

Any article found in the school or on the grounds must be handed in at the reception. Lost property may be claimed from the office.

Radios, tape decks, toys or dangerous weapons like pen knives etc. may not be brought to school.

Cell phones must be switched off for the entire school day. Under no circumstances may cell phones be worn around the neck on a lanyard, they must be concealed. Parents may not be contacted during school hours on a cell phone – communication is via the office. The school takes no responsibility for lost/stolen cell phones.

K. TUCKSHOP

Although tuckshop facilities are available, special dietary requirements are not provided, these must be supplied by the parents.

Street vendors are not permitted on the school property or on the pavements and learners may not purchase any item from strangers.

Learners are to queue and only to move to the counter when a serving place is vacant. “Pushing-in” is not permitted.

No junior child may go to the tuckshop earlier than 5 minutes before the break; and a senior child may go to the tuckshop only after the bell for break has rung.

Common etiquette must be practiced at all times.

Other than tuckshop monitors, learners may not enter the tuckshop.
